What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?
A Forward Deployed Engineer embeds with customers to turn AI and complex software into production systems — owning delivery under real-world constraints.
Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a customer-embedded engineering role. You sit with (or deeply alongside) the customer, discover what “done” actually means, build the integrations that make the product work in their environment, and stay accountable until the system is used — not merely demoed.
In 2026, most high-visibility FDE demand comes from enterprise AI: getting LLMs, agents, and data platforms into regulated, messy, partially offline, or heavily customized customer stacks.

A day in the life (typical mix)
- Morning sync with customer stakeholders on blockers and scope
- Deep work: pipelines, auth, agent tools, eval harnesses, dashboards
- Architecture tradeoffs with security / IT / data owners
- Writeups that translate engineering risk into executive language
- Feedback to the core product team on what should be platformized
Travel and on-site intensity vary by company. Some FDE roles are hub- based with periodic customer visits; others expect substantial field time — especially in defense and industrial settings.
